A turkey is a large bird in the grouse family, with juicy flesh and the potential to feed an army of people! Turkeys were originally called turkey fowl after they were mistaken for guinea fowl when they were first discovered on the American continent, but the name was soon shortened to plain and simple 'turkey'.
