Black Russian Cupcakes recipe

These alcohol spiked cupcakes are perfect for a party - chocolate cupcakes are brushed with vodka and coffee liquor, then topped with an alcoholic buttercream.


  • 110g butter
  • 110g caster sugar
  • 80g plain flour
  • 30g cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. coffee powder dissolved in 1 tbsp. hot water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp. vodka
  • 1 tbsp. coffee liquor
  • 110g butter
  • 225g icing sugar
  • 1 tbsp. vodka
  • 1 tbsp. coffee liquor


  1. Preheat oven to 170C and grease 12 cupcake liners.

  2. Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then beat in the coffee liquid. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder. Stir to combine.

  3. Divide the mixture between the prepared cupcake liners. Bake for 20 minutes until golden on top and springy to the touch. Leave to cool.

  4. Mix together 1 tbsp. vodka and coffee liquor. Brush onto the cupcakes. Make the icing by beating together the butter, sugar, vodka and coffee liquor until smooth. Use to ice the cupcakes.

If you like, you can easily omit the alcohol - just add extra cocoa powder or coffee in its place. Recipe makes 12 cupcakes.
