Challah recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 3 hours

Challah is a Jewish loaf that's traditionally plaited, but you can also make it easily in the bread machine for a similar texture and flavour. If you like, make the dough in the bread machine, then plait it and bake it in the oven.

  • 175ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tbsp. butter
  • 380g bread flour
  • 4 tbsp. caster sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. dried active baking yeast

1. Put the milk, eggs, butter, flour, sugar, salt and yeast into the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Basic Bread and Light Crust settings, then press Start.

For a sweeter version of this bread, add chocolate chips to the dough. Recipe makes 1 loaf.
