Chinese Dipping Sauce recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

This wonderfully savoury dipping sauce is perfect for serving with dishes like spring rolls or crispy fried duck. It's simple to make, too. Garnish with some thinly sliced spring onions to make it extra-special.


  • 4 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 1 tsp. sesame oil
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 spring onion
  • 1/2 tsp. caster sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
  • Pepper to taste


  1. Peel and mince the garlic clove. Remove the tough outer parts of the spring onion. Finely mince the spring onion.

  2. In a bowl, stir together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, water, sesame oil, garlic clove, spring onion, caster sugar, ground ginger and pepper. Serve at room temperature.

If you like, add a little bit of minced chilli to the sauce to give it a bit of bite. Recipe serves 4.
