Chocolate Loaf recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 3 hours

This sweet loaf is flavoured with unsweetened cocoa powder to give it a rich, chocolatey flavour. For an extra chocolatey hit, add some chocolate chunks to the loaf.


  • 45g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 125ml boiling water
  • 2 1/2 tsp. dried active baking yeast
  • 2 tsp. caster sugar
  • 125ml warm water
  • 410g bread flour
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 egg plus 1 egg yolk


  1. Dissolve the cocoa powder in the boiling water until smooth. In another bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water for 10 minutes or until creamy.

  2. Put the cocoa mix, yeast mix, bread flour, sugar, salt, veg oil and eggs into the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Sweet Bread cycle and press Start.

If you add chocolate chips, add them at the signal or towards the end of the last kneading cycle. Recipe makes 1 loaf.
