Hot Cross Buns in the Bread Machine recipe

Preparation Time: 2 hours | Cooking Time: 30 minutes

This recipe for hot cross buns in the bread machine is a brilliant take on the traditional Easter recipe. Flavoured with orange zest and cinnamon, they're delicious when toasted and spread with butter.

  • 90ml water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 5 tbsp. caster sugar
  • 4 tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. grated orange zest
  • 400g bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. dried active baking yeast
  • 80g sultanas
  • 100g icing sugar
  • 1 tbsp. water

  1. Place water, egg, salt, sugar, butter, cinnamon, orange zest, bread flour and baking yeast into the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the Dough setting and 5 minutes before the end of the cycle.

  2. Turn out onto a lightly floured worktop and then form into 15 buns. Place into a greased 23x33cm baking tin and rise for one hour.

  3. Bake at 190C for 20-25 minutes or until golden and lightly risen. Make the icing by mixing together icing sugar and water and drizzle onto the buns in the shape of cross once cooled.

For extra zingy flavour, mix a tbsp. of orange juice into the icing instead of water. Recipe makes 15 hot cross buns.
