Chinese Pork and Pak Choi Soup recipe

Preparation Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 10 minutes

This wonderfully fresh and flavourful soup is the perfect dinner party starter. It would also make for a delicious lunchtime meal, or as a filling supper. Pork tenderloin is simmered with pak choi and chilli in a flavourful broth - yum!


  • 600ml chicken stock
  • 400g pork tenderloin fillet
  • 200g pak choi
  • 1 bunch spring onions
  • 1 thumb sized piece root ginger
  • 1 fat red chilli
  • 2 tsp. five spice powder
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce (or more to taste)


  1. Slice the chilli in half and scrape out the seeds using the back of your knife. Thinly slice the flesh. Snap the leaves off of the pak choi and slice into chunks. Thinly slice the pork. Remove the dark green parts of the spring onions and thinly slice on the diagonal. Peel the ginger and finely dice.

  2. Place the chicken stock, pork, pak choi, ginger, chilli, five spice powder and soy sauce into a large saucepan.

  3. Bring to a simmer. Cover, and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the pak choi is tender and the pork cooked through. Before serving, scatter with chopped spring onion. Add extra soy sauce if you like.

If you like, make this dish with beef instead - just adjust your cooking times to accomodate. You could even use chicken. Recipe serves 4.
