Portuguese Sweet Bread recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 3 hours

This sweet loaf will fast become a staple in your house. It's perfect when toasted and sliced and topped with butter, or as the base of a bread pudding. If you like, add some chocolate chips.


  • 225ml milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 400g bread flour
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 30g butter
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 1/2 tsp. dried active baking yeast


1. Put milk, egg, flour, sugar, butter, salt and yeast into the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Sweet Bread and press Start.

You could also add some dried cranberries or blueberries, if you like. Recipe makes 1 loaf.
