This crumble only has 5 ingredients and is simple cooking at its best. Try it with some thick crème fraiche or sweetened double cream.
200g caster sugar
125g plain flour
80g melted butter
1 tsp. mixed spice
Remove the peel from the apples and core them. Chop them into rough pieces of equal size.
Put them into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and cook until slightly mushy. This could take up to half an hour, just keep an eye on them.
Make the crumble. Put the flour, sugar, butter and spice into a bowl and mix together well. Set to one side for now.
Preheat the oven to 180C/gas mark 4.
Tip the apples in a baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble over the top and smooth over the apples until they are completely covered.
Cook for 40 minutes or until golden.
