Sourdough Bread recipe

Preparation Time: 7 days | Cooking Time: 3 hours

This delicious sourdough bread will become your new favourite - with a chewy crust and a soft, fluffy interior, it's perfect for toast and sandwiches.


  • 280g sourdough starter from this recipe:
  • 475ml warm water
  • 7g dry active yeast
  • 250g plain flour
  • Good pinch caster sugar
  • 385g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp. caster sugar
  • 1 tbsp. veg oil
  • 5 tbsp. water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 dstsp. dried active yeast


  1. First, make the starter. Mix yeast, warm water, sugar and flour in a bowl until well combine, then cover the bowl loosely. Place bowl onto a baking sheet or tray, then leave in a warm place for 7 days. Each day, feed the starter with 40g plain flour, 40ml warm water and a pinch of sugar.

  2. When the mixture is bubbly and has a sour smell, keep covered in the fridge until ready to bake. Feed as desired.

  3. To make the sourdough, let the starter come to room temperature, then put the starter, flour, sugar, oil, water, salt and yeast into the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select Basic or White Bread setting and Medium Crust if your machine includes that option, then press Start.

You can also use yoghurt to make a starter if you prefer - just use 280g of your favourite sourdough starter. Recipe makes 1 loaf.
