Southern Fried Chicken recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 40 minutes

This clever version of Southern fried chicken is a great copy of the restaurant fave - just serve with your favourite side, like home baked wedges or a big salad.


  • 200g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp. each salt, mustard powder, thyme and ginger
  • 1 tsp. each garlic granules or salt, basil and oregano
  • 4 tbsp. paprika
  • 1 tbsp. ground pepper
  • 8 chicken portions
  • 1 egg
  • Oil


  1. Combine flour, salt, mustard, thyme, ginger, garlic, basil, oregano, paprika and pepper in a large bowl. Beat the egg, dip the chicken in the egg, then into the flour mix.

  2. Heat oil in a large frying pan. Add the chicken and fry on all sides until crisp, then put onto a baking tray and into the oven at 190C for 20-30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

If you like your chicken a little spicier, add some chilli flakes or chilli powder to the flour coating. Recipe serves 4.
