Spiced Red Cabbage with Apple recipe

Preparation Time: 10 minutes | Cooking Time: 45 minutes

A wonderful side dish that works particularly well alongside roasted meats, in this recipe, cabbage, apple and spices are cooked together until sweet and tender. This dish is particularly lovely through the winter or when it's cold out!


  • 1 red cabbage
  • 3 apples
  • 250ml cider or white wine vinegar
  • 175ml water
  • 4 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. each ground cinnamon, cloves and allspice
  • 2 tbsp. butter


  1. Shred the cabbage. Peel, core and dice the apples.

  2. Put the water and vinegar into a saucepan. Stir in the cabbage, apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and allspice as well as 1 tbsp. of the butter.

  3. Simmer for around 45 minutes, stirring often, until the cabbage is tender. To serve, stir in the remaining butter.

For extra sweetness, try adding some raisins soaked in water to the cabbage. Recipe serves 4 as a side.
